Defence is too vital an issue to be the preserve of experts and professionals. Defence involves the survival of the nation. Its institutions, its territory, its vital interests, just as much as its values and its ability to withstand adversity. Defence is, of course, a policy. It is a commitment for the men and women who have chosen the profession of arms. But it is also the expression of a people's determination to remain masters of their own destiny.
Thinking about defence is the subject of these «Rencontres IHEDN» organised by the Institut des hautes études de défense nationale on Saturday 6 June 2015 at the École militaire.
Twelve round tables will bring together thinkers, practitioners and representatives of civil society to discuss «citizen» issues, with the aim of bringing into the public arena a debate that will affect our future.
The debates will take place in four areas:
- Terminator, like the war of the machines... Becoming aware of our role in collective defence.
- Minotaur, symbol of man's destructive impulses... Ensuring that defence concerns every citizen.
- Valmy 2.0, imagining tomorrow's war... Identifying our vulnerabilities to meet today's threats.
- Gladiator, when the spectacle of force unfolds in the arena... Thinking about defence and anticipating future violence.
