The Institut des hautes études de défense nationale (IHEDN) is a public institution under the authority of the Prime Minister. For more than 80 years, its mission has been to contribute to strengthening national cohesion by promoting a culture of defence and national security within the nation. It is aimed at a wide audience of French and foreign civilians and military personnel (around 13,000 people a year).
In 2006, the IHEDN inaugurated an experimental seminar in the Ile-de-France region. «Youth Relay» which was aimed at social players selected on the basis of their experience and from sensitive urban areas. It has since been perpetuated under the title of «National cohesion and citizenship» and the target group of trainees has broadened: local elected representatives, association executives, executives from the Ministry of Education, government departments and local authorities, magistrates, military personnel, police officers, etc., all of whom play a role in relaying information to young people. The diversity of the participants and the different points of view put into perspective are the source of a great deal of interest.’rich exchanges.
Created in 2010, the IHEDN Endowment Fund aims, through sponsorship, to support the Institute in fulfilling its missions, in particular that of developing a spirit of defence. Since 2011, it has taken the theme of «National cohesion and citizenship» to the regions of Lille, Marseille, Le Havre, Nantes, Lyon, Amiens, Clermont Ferrand and Châteauroux.
